Sky Temple
I love the story of St Bridgett. She is said to have been a beautiful and generous girl. One time she was sent by her mother to fetch some milk. On her return she found someone who needed milk so she gave it all to them. As she carried her empty container home she realised that her mother would not be too pleased she was coming home empty handed. She simply prayed and carried on her merry way. When she arrived home her container was once again filled with milk.
Another time, she was being ordained by St Patrick. To cut a long story short she was accidentally ordained as a Bishop - an honour women were not to suppose to have, however when St Patrick realised he said the wrong thing he basically said, “Oh well. You will do great things for God!” As she left she stumbled on the balcony. And as she hit the balcony branches sprouted out and flowered! Such was the life inside of her!
Now, whilst these stories are impossible to verify, I wanted to share them because I believe that we have no idea how much life and power the born again believer has inside of us!
For many years I cried out to God to come, for revival to come, for His presence to come, for His power to come, and I could go on and on. I was looking outwards for God as if He were in a Temple in the sky, when really I should have been looking within myself the very temple of The Holy Spirit.
This error comes from a deficient understanding of our union with Christ. When we are born again our old sinful Spirit dies. And we are now a brand new creation. We are now dead to sin but alive to God. It is no longer I that lives, but Christ that lives in me. The same Spirit that rose Jesus from the dead now lives in me! I now have everything I need for life and godliness. I have been blessed with every spiritual blessing in Christ. In the Spirit I am one with Jesus!
When I want to experience the presence of God I do not need to look outside of myself hoping that He will come. Instead I simply look in - because that is where He already is. He lives inside of me. The mystics use to call this contemplation or heart prayer. Modern Charismatics may call this soaking, but the idea is that the God lives in me! He is closer than we think. We don’t need Him “to come to us” again! He already has and He isn’t going anywhere!
Therefore it now becomes an exercise in awareness. We become aware that He is in us and therefore present. We become aware that in His presence is fullness of joy, pleasure forever more. This is not simply an intellectual line to believe and agree to, it is a truth to experience!
So take a moment now now to look inside of yourself. Take a deep breath, close your eyes and become aware that God is inside of you. Jesus now lives in your body. Become aware of the fulness of joy and pleasure forever more that is already inside of you. God is here.
