6 Ways to Develop Spiritual Hunger

“A hunger for His kingdom and His righteousness is a gift of God. Not everybody has it. Not everybody has this huge desire to seek His Kingdom.” - Rolland Baker

Matthew 5:6 says that the hungry get fed. We see right throughout history that when people get hungry for a move of God, and combine that with faith, that breakthrough comes.

I think of the woman who had been sick with the issue of blood for years, but she didn’t give up hope of a miracle. She wasn’t allowed to be around people but she pushed through the crowd. Doctors couldn’t heal her but she reached out to Jesus. She was hungry for her breakthrough and so she didn’t let her history, the crowd, any fear or any past experiences stop her.

Hunger + Faith = Breakthrough.

But how do we develop this hunger? Here are 6 ways to Develop Spiritual Hunger that have been helpful for me. What are some things that you would add?

1.     Fast and Pray – I remember Heidi Baker saying “The reason we fast is so that we’ll be hungry.” Sometimes we are so full that we’re not hungry. Sometimes we have so much going on, we’re so busy, and so content with everything that we are not hungry. When we fast we get hungry, and when I get hungry I use that moment to pray and say, “Lord, I am so hungry for you to move! Nothing but you will satisfy!”

2.     Testimonies – Watch testimonies, listen to testimonies, ask people their testimonies, remember the testimonies in your life. Thank God for them and ask Him to do them again. If you want to watch some testimonies I suggest 40 Stories, I am Second and anything by Darren Wilson at Wanderlust Productions.

3.     Revival History – Research St Francis, the Moravians, Smith Wigglesworth, William and Catherine Booth. Read of old revivals and check out the recent ones. Check out the Revival Classics Library, or take this free Revival Class at Commission the City.

4.     Go where He is moving – Find out where God is moving and travel there if you have to. You’ll see amazing things happen and you’ll be inspired to bring it home. If you’re looking for a mission trip where you’ll see God do amazing things I highly recommend Iris Harvest Missions School, a Global Awakening Mission Trip or an Impact Nations Mission Trip.

5.     Meditate and Worship – Read the scriptures and look for the love and power of God. As you read the Bible meditate on who God is and what He does. Praise and Worship Him. As you read the Scriptures and worship, ask Holy Spirit to reveal the heart of The Father to you. For a fun activity go through the Gospels and Acts and record all the miracles of Jesus. You will find that God does want to move on Earth!

6.     Look Around –Go and look in the darkest corners of your community and listen. Listen to those living in darkness, and listen to what the God of love has to say. Allow the brokeness of humanity, and the cry of the poor touch your heart. Ask God to break your heart for what breaks His. Ask Him to fill you with His love.

So there are my 6 Ways to Develop Spiritual Hunger. Let us remember the promises of Jesus,

“Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled.” (Matt 5:6)

“But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.” (Matt 6:33)
